Boiler Scrappage Scheme now Closed (27 may 2010)

The Energy Saving Scotland Boiler Scrappage Scheme is now closed. The Scottish Boiler Scrappage Scheme has seen a huge level of interest and the EST has now allocated all vouchers.

There are other Scottish Government schemes available such as the Energy Assistance Package. You may be eligible for energy saving measures or even a whole new heating system. Find out more information about the Energy Assistance Package

Scottish Government Launches £2m Boiler Scrappage Scheme

Thanks to lobbying by SNIPEF up to 5,000 households in Scotland are now able to apply to receive a grant of £400 towards the cost of a new boiler, under a new boiler scrappage scheme. Households who have a central heating boiler which is listed as a category G rated boiler, will qualify for cashback on a new energy saving model. Click here to download a spreadsheet which shows the boilers in the category G rating.

Householders must install a boiler which is on the Energy Saving Trust approved list. (click here to see the models which qualify). Upgrading to a greener boiler will help households reduce heating costs by about a quarter and save £190 a year on fuel bills.

Households can now apply online or over the phone through the Scottish Government’s Energy Saving Scotland advice network. Installers must be registered with Gas Safe (for gas installations) and a recognised industry body such as CLE, SNIPEF or OFTEC. Members of certain other industry schemes may also be used and applicants can contact the Energy Saving Trust if they have concerns about who they can use. Installation of a microgeneration technology must be carried out by a person qualified under the Microgeneration Certification Certification Scheme.

SNIPEF Director Robert Burgon said: “The Scottish boiler scrappage scheme will be a great opportunity for many households to upgrade their inefficient heating systems which will be costing them many hundreds of pounds each year in wasted fuel costs.

“Installing a new system will not only help the environment it will also help save money on their heating bills.

“Like many other industries the plumbing and heating sector has been badly hit by the recession and the scheme will prove a boost to many of our member businesses.”

The Boiler Scrappage Scheme will be run through the Energy Saving Scotland advice network – the Scottish Government’s 'one stop shop' for energy efficiency, renewables and sustainable transport advice.

The advice network will issue vouchers either by calling 0800 512 012 or through the Energy Saving Trust website . The scheme will operate on a first come, first served basis and will last until all the funds have been allocated. Households will be able to apply over the phone or online and, if eligible, will receive a £400 voucher towards the installation of a new boiler. The vouchers can then be redeemed for cash from the Energy Saving Trust once the boiler has been installed.

Industry Supporters

"Introduction of the Boiler Scrappage scheme will reinforce Scotland's commitment to be a world leader in cutting carbon emissions and will see real savings for householders in the cost of their fuel bills".

Tom Galloway, SNIPEF President

A scheme to replace inefficient boilers in Scotland will be of huge benefit to both homeowners and the Scottish heating industry as a whole.  Householders will benefit from lower fuel bills, boiler distributors and merchants will benefit from an increased demand for high efficiency A rated condensing boilers and registered installers will benefit from increased numbers of installations.”

Robert Beagley, Regional Trading Director, Plumb Center

"PTS believe that the scrappage scheme will make a significant contribution towards the eradication of fuel poverty as well as giving plumbing and heating installers a welcome commercial boost”.

Kevin Dermidy, PTS Area Director for Scotland

"The introduction of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme will not only stimulate the plumbing and heating sector with regards sales of new energy efficient boilers and provide installers, manufacturers and merchants with much needed additional work, but it will also help deliver significant sustainability benefits for Scotland and the UK”
